On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the CBS and EliteXC Saturday Night Fights card, which takes place this Saturday, May 31, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on CBS.

On a media conference call, we spoke with the main eventers, heavyweights Kimbo Slice and James Thompson, about their upcoming fight. We also spoke with play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson and EliteXC promoter Gary Shaw.

And, in a lengthy interview, we spoke with mixed martial arts legend Frank Shamrock, who will be an analyst on this CBS telecast, both about this show and his own future fighting plans.

We also comment on the level of striking in the latest UFC show, and the mixed victory in the restoration of the Arizona State University wrestling program, primarily through private contributions.

I was also a guest on the latest edition of Carson's Corner, which can be heard here: http://carsonscorner.podomatic.com.

SHOW DETAILS

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the beating received this past Friday by former Chris Byrd in his ESPN2 bout with Shaun George. Byrd, a former heavyweight champion, was fighting at light heavyweight, and was stopped in the ninth round after looking drained and getting battered throughout the fight.

We next focus on some important correspondence from a listener who understands the connection between the combat sports, the need for a warrior culture by people who are oppressed and downtrodden, and life in general.

Among the other issues discussed are the appearance of EliteXC fighter Kimbo Slice on the Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS, the flaws in the pay-per-view model for the combat sports, and what the International Fight League needs to do to improve their fortunes.

Next, we speak with the three IFL fighters who were victorious in their championship fights this past Friday, May 16, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. They are lightweight champion Ryan Schultz, who won a unanimous decision over Deividas Taurosevicius, to retain his belt; Dan Miller, who captured the middleweight belt with a first-round kneebar submission over Ryan McGivern; and Roy Nelson, who retained his heavyweight title with a first-round TKO over Brad Imes.

SecondsOut Radio: John Duddy

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, host Eddie Goldman speaks with unbeaten middleweight "Ireland's" John Duddy (19-0, 15 KOs) (http://www.myspace.com/irishjohnduddy). The popular and exciting Duddy will fight Dupre Strickland (18-1-1, 7 KOs) Friday night, May 18, at the Beacon Theater on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Wallid Ismail and the Mixed Martial Arts World League (MMAWL)

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts and jiu-jitsu legend Wallid Ismail.

Wallid is the driving force behind the newly-formed Mixed Martial Arts World League (MMAWL) (http://www.mmawl.com). This organization has recently begun offering webcasts of many MMA fight events from around the world put on by various promoters. Using the latest technology from the Internet TV provider wavelit.com (http://wavelit.com), these shows are being offered both as pay-per-views and for free.

The next live pay-per-view webcast will be the Gracie Fighting Championships (Gracie Fighting Championships (http://www.gfcfighter.com) MMA event, which will be held this coming Saturday, May 19, at the Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Among those headlining that card will be ADCC and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and 2007 ADCC champion Damian Maia.

We spoke with the always-outspoken and colorful Wallid about all these topics and how he sees the MMAWL developing.

NO HOLDS BARRED: UFC-Pride Deal Commentary, and Kelly Perdew, President of ProElite.com

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, the second this week, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the purchase this week of Pride, the largest and heretofore most successful mixed martial arts promotion in the world, by the owners of UFC, the largest and heretofore most successful mixed martial arts promotion in the U.S. An analogy is drawn about what to expect from this arrangement with the deleterious effects on boxing by its monopolization by the notorious International Boxing Club (IBC) in the 1950s. The IBC was later broken up by the U.S. federal government.

We also highlight a major attempt to continue independent promotion of MMA. The web site ProElite.com (http://proelite.com) is inviting fans, fighters, and all involved or just interested in MMA to uses its site for social networking, similar to what MySpace does for the general public.ProElite.com is also providing a free live webcast of the Icon Sport "Epic" show from Honolulu, Hawaii, this Saturday, March 31. That card features a title fight between Frank Trigg and Robbie Lawler. Also on that card are Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Charuto Verissimo.

We speak at length about all this with Kelly Perdew (http://kellyperdew.proelite.com), President of ProElite.com.
